Lexicographer is an authoring system for creating electronic references.

Relevant learn-by-doing language arts activities. Lexicographer can be used by teachers and students alike. Software developers have, in general, neglected the needs of teachers. At Abiogenesis, we gave this problem some thought, and designed a software package that better assists teachers in creating software learning activities and materials. Language activities are an essential part of the school curriculum. Lexicographer provides a means to easily and quickly create word lists and dictionaries targeted for particular age groups, subjects, or specialized needs such as remedial, enrichment, ESL, etc.

Teacher and student learning activities included. The academic version of Lexicographer comes with reproducible group and individual learning activities, and independent learning contracts. Noncommercial dictionary modules can be taken home by students and viewed with Lexica, our modular dictionary viewing software.
Lexicographer works with text files. Lexicographer works in conjunction with text or RTF (Rich Text Format) files, which can be created with your word processor or text editor. The addition of tags allows Lexicographer to turn the file into a computer dictionary which can be viewed by Lexica.
Lexicographer is modular. This means teachers can pool their resources, and build a library of dictionaries, accessible to all. It also makes it possible to engage in class projects where students work on different files, and bring the results together to create a common reference work.

Lexicographer Commercial Version

Lexicographer allows you to create commercial quality electronic dictionaries.

Simple, low-cost license arrangement. The Lexicompatible format is proprietary to Abiogenesis Software, but we made sure that Lexicographer was set up with an accessible, easy-to-manage license arrangement. The publishing industry is familiar with royalty arrangements, but we still kept it as simple as possible. We wanted individuals, authors and small companies to be able to create dictionary modules, with minimal startup costs. We've designed a pay-as-you-go licensing system which applies to units sold, on a quarterly basis, payable after the sale goes through. The license fee is very reasonable (approx. .5% - 2% of retail) payable as a flat rate per sale.

Lexicographer is flexible. Lexicographer works well for both scholarly references and consumer dictionaries. We're encouraging developers to create general English language modules, word origins, unusual words, colloquial terms, difficult words, etc. We also want to encourage and support the development of medical, scientific and law dictionaries. Finally, we hope to see lots of consumer special interest dictionaries, such as dictionaries of plant names, flowers, dinosaurs, and more. Lexicographer supports pictures and sounds, and comes complete with a full-featured phonetic font for special purpose pronunciation needs.

To assist our publishers and developers in reaching as broad a market as possible, we will be widely distributing Lexica, our Lexicompatible viewing module. We hope this will quickly establish a market of consumers familiar with the interface, who are interested in purchasing a variety of modules to use with their copy of Lexica. We will also offer space, at a reasonable fee, for displaying third-party dictionary modules at relevant trade shows and conferences.

Lexica General Product Description

Lexica is the first general consumer third-party-module electronic dictionary viewing program.

Lexica has some important design features not available elsewhere, including multi-dictionary, multi-window, and multi-screen capabilities. The interface is attractive, easy-to-learn and customizable. The windows are sizeable, and the font size and style can be set to your preferences. More than one dictionary can be loaded at one time, and their order can be set in the Preferences menu. Beautiful color pictures can be displayed, and selected words, or whole definitions can be read aloud by the computer.
