About Lexicographer - Electronic Dictionary Maker

Multimedia capabilities:
Lexicographer supports text, speech and pictures, and comes with a redistributable, run-time, dictionary viewing application.

Types of computers:

• Lexicographer runs on Macintosh computers with system 7 or later, and on Amiga computers with Emplant installed. (It may also run on NeXT computers with Daydream. We'll let you know when we finish testing it with Daydream.)
• BeBox and PC-compatible versions are in progress. Release dates to be announced. The BeBox is an exciting, new, multitasking, multithreaded, multimedia computer from Be, Inc.

Download this demo and see for yourself how easy and intuitive it is to create electronic dictionaries. The demo version includes everything available in the commercial version with the following exceptions:

• Customization options for Lexica, the viewing utility, have been disabled.
• Entries in the demo version are limited to a total of 250 entries.
• You may only include keywords in the demo version beginning with the letters A, B, or C.
• The PostScript and bitmap special Phonetic fonts are not included.
• A full print manual is not included with the demo (a simple one-page screen description of how to create a dictionary is provided instead).

A dictionary viewing utility like Lexica isn't much good without some dictionary data to see how it works, so be sure to download at least one of the small sample dictionaries included below. These little dictionaries are small (and some have only gray scale pictures) to save you download time, just remember that Lexica is powerful, and can handle BIG dictionaries with lots of entries, and full color pictures as well!

Designed especially for making dictionaries, indexes, and glossaries. These dictionaries can be created by teachers, librarians and special needs instructors, or by students, from middle school to post secondary.

Students can engage in learn-by-doing vocabulary, and word usage activities. Have them create a dictionary of old English terms, or types of clouds, names of chemical elements, math theorems, 20th century poets, geological periods, significant physics discoveries, definitions of emotions, cell structures. Definitions can be shared with classmates, or saved for future semesters to build a living, growing library of teaching resources.

The academic version of Lexicographer comes with sample reproducible group and individual learning activities, and independent learning contracts on diskettes. Noncommercial dictionary modules can be taken home by students and viewed with Lexica, our modular dictionary viewing software.

Lexicographer works with simple text files.
Lexicographer works in conjunction with text or RTF (Rich Text Format) files, which can be created with your word processor or text editor. The addition of tags allows Lexicographer to turn the file into a computer dictionary which can be viewed by Lexica.

Teachers can pool their resources, and build a library of dictionaries, accessible to all. It also makes it possible to engage in class projects where students work on different files, and bring the results together to create a common reference work. Lexicographer is an authoring system for creating multimedia references. It can potentially replace approximately $300,000 worth, or more, of 'developing from scratch' programming. This remarkable, easy-to-use tool makes it possible for authors, software developers, and publishers to get into the electronic references market. Lexicographer also provides corporations, with industry jargon needs, with a way to create dictionaries for themselves, and for potential sale to others in the same industry.

Simple, low-cost license arrangement.
The Lexicompatible format is proprietary to Abiogenesis Software, but we made sure that Lexicographer was set up with an accessible, easy-to-manage license arrangement. The publishing industry is familiar with royalty arrangements, but we still kept it as simple as possible. We've designed an easy, no-risk, after-sale, pay-as-you-go licensing system of $1 per commercial module sold. This is very reasonable (approx. .5% - 2% of retail) and helps us provide developer support services.

Lexicographer is flexible.
Lexicographer works for scholarly references and consumer dictionaries. We're encouraging developers to create general English language modules, word origins, unusual words, colloquial terms, difficult words, etc. We also want to encourage and support the development of medical, scientific and law dictionaries. Finally, we hope to see lots of consumer special interest dictionaries, such as dictionaries of plant names, flowers, dinosaurs, and more. Lexicographer supports pictures and speech, and comes complete with a full-featured phonetic font for special purpose pronunciation needs.

General Product Description

Lexica is the first general consumer modular electronic dictionary viewing program. It is included free with every copy of Lexicographer.

Lexica lets you load more than one dictionary.
Lexica is modular. We wanted to create a product that would be low cost, which would attract many developers, which would fit into new niche markets, and which would provide the consumer with a wider range of dictionaries from which to choose.

Full-featured run-time application.
Lexica has some important design features not available elsewhere, including multi-dictionary, multi-window, and multi-screen capabilities. The interface is attractive, easy-to-learn and customizable. The windows are sizeable, and the font size and style can be set to your preferences. More than one dictionary can be loaded at one time, and their order can be set in the Preferences menu. Beautiful color pictures can be displayed, and selected words, or whole definitions can be read aloud by the computer.
