My Life by Bill Clinton

This massively best-selling hardback is one of those love-it-or-hate-it volumes. Readers seem to either really identify with the book and enjoy it or they feel it does little to illuminate the lesser-known parts of Clinton's life and the impact of his relationships on his successes and failures.

It's hard to know whether books like this are written by the celebrities themselves or by ghostwriters working from the celebrities' notes. We've only read the first part, so far, and it doesn't have the 'word polish' you usually find with books from professional writers and also focuses on Clinton's concerns in much the way he did during his administration, so it may well be Clinton's own work.

Read the reviews and decide for yourself if you would enjoy reading this autobiography of our 42nd U.S. President.

The author provides a post-9/11 point of view that differs from that of the Bush administration in its analysis of terrorism and recommended strategies for dealing with it other than as a 'war.'

Insurgency & Terrorism: Inside Modern Revolutionary Warfare by Bard E. O'Neill $15.37, 182 pages. March 2001.

A framework for understanding and analyzing terrorist activity.

The author is a former national security advisor who discusses major security threats facing the U.S. including biological terrorism, cybercrime, etc.

One of the more recent publications on this topic and potential threats to safety and security.

An investigative viewpoint on the existence and dangers of biological warfare, including activities of the United States government.

- The New Jackals: Ramzi Yousef, Osama bin Laden and the Future of Terrorism

The story of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and FBI investigation and investigative information on possible ties with Iraq and others.

- The Shallow Graves of Rwanda Shaharyar M. Khan, Mary Robinson $17.50, 200 pages, Jan. 2001.

Khan was a special UN representative assigned to Rwanda. He describes how more than a million people died in massacres after the Rwandan President's plane was shot down. Gives insight into the workings of the UN and the complexity of foreign conflicts.

- European Democracies Against Terrorism: Governmental Policies and Intergovernmental Cooperation (Onati International Series in Law and Society) F. Reinares (editor), $44.95, Hardcover, Dec. 2000.

This book has not yet been reviewed but may be of interest since the Europeans have more first-hand experience with terrorism on a daily basis than North Americans and we can no doubt learn from those experiences.

Strikes by bin Laden against US embassies and retaliatory strikes. Includes some surprising, perhaps correct, theories about who sponsors and trains terrorists in this region.

Systematically documents the terrorist efforts of Saddam Husein in relation to the World Trade Center bombing in the mid-1990s in which the finger was pointed at Ramzi Yousef.

- Letters from Tel Mond Prison: An Israeli Settler Defends His Act of Terror Era Rapaport, William B. Helmreich $23.00, 280 pages, November 1996.

An Israeli West Bank setter planted a bomb and subsequently became a fugitive, later returning to Israel where he stood trial. These are letters of justification, written from prison.

- Destroying the World to Save It : Aum Shinrikyo, Apocalyptic Violence, and the the New Global Terrorism Robert Jay Lifton $20.80, Hardcover 352 pages, October 1999.

The author describes a loosely connected global subculture of terrorist activities, based on the patterns of recent terrorism.

- Fundamentalism Reborn?: Afghanistan and the Taliban William Maley, editor $19.50, 288 pages, March 1998.

A series of essays about the rise of the Taliban, written by those who study Afghanistan and the politics there.

- Afghanistan's Endless War: State Failure, Regional Politics, and the Rise of the Taliban Larry P. Goodson $35.00 hardback, 264 pages, Sept. 2001.

No reviews yet, but may be worth considering. An analysis of the Afghan war over the last two decades and the importance of Afghan in the bigger picture.

Note, this is FICTION. However, it is of interest because it includes Osama bin Laden and other notable figures as characters.

- The Year 2000 Killers: Terrorism by Computer Wenda Wardell Morrone $23.95, 352 pages, May 1999.

A FICTION novel about a computer consultant who helps businesses with Y2K problems and gets caught up in a terrorist plot. The book is listed here because the technical material may be of interest to those looking for a fictional introduction to computer-related terrorism.

- Extreme Faction Trevor Scott $12.95, 288 pages, Sept. 1999

A FICTIONAL account of a former CIA agent in Odessa Russia whose story unfolds as Kurdish Terrorists fight for a homeland.

A sobering look at what information is real and what is fabricated to meet political ends or the perceived best 'story' for selling news publications. This gives a sense of how information can be twisted and controlled on a global basis with regard to important events.

An inside account of the Delta Force activities - a unit intended to respond to terrorist incidents.
